- Introduction:
"The disappointment was always the people who didn't come home...I lost five men in my platoon, I lost a company commander, I lost another lieutenant, you know, my high school classmates that didn't come home. That's the hard part. I didn't have very many soldiers that didn't have a Purple Heart."
– Bob Berry
Many veterans have rightly stated that the heroes of America's wars are those who never made it home. So many, throughout our military history, recount the pain of lost friends, buddies. Compelling as well is the perspective of those who lost men under their command. What can heighten leadership more than to know your leadership decisions are truly a matter of life and death. But, no matter how well a leader leads, men die in combat. No wonder those who've experienced America's wars echo in unison the power of the bond of combat. As Bob Berry recounts..."the guys depend on you and you depend on them."
This is: "Berry, a service story".
