There's an old adage in the Army, or military service..."never volunteer." Many veterans have described the unpleasantness that followed a raised hand to volunteer for a an assignment. That's what makes Chris Crowley's story, and all those who flew Dustoff in Vietnam, such a compelling and heroic tale. The truth was, you had to volunteer to fly an unarmed helicopter in the Vietnam war. They weren't compelling soldiers to do so, it was a choice...to fly into the most dangerous LZ's, whether established, or just hovering above the tree tops, so that others might live. If that isn't compelling enough, understand the Dustoff pilots and crews rescued anyone... American servicemen, South Vietnamese (friendly) soldiers, civilians, and yes, even the enemy. No wonder they are the first unit of the Vietnam war to receive the Congressional Gold Medal.
This is: "Crowley, a service story".
