"The Navy had a big name. And they did a good thing. But they didn't do what the Merchants did."
– Emery Hinkhouse
It may astound people to realize that the Merchant Marines of WWII - those charged with ferrying supplies to the theaters of war - lost more seamen in the war, a higher death rate proportionately, than any branch of the US Armed Forces. As Mr. Hinkhouse tells us, "you have to have supplies to win a war", and supply they did. At great cost. Both Germany and Japan made these supply ships a priority of attack for the very reason just quoted. It was men like Emery who served thanklessly and made the victory of WWII possible. Even more astounding is the realization that the Merchant Marines received no government services, no GI Bill, nothing, upon returning from war. Not until the 1990's was their contribution officially recognized. Listen to this remarkable story of the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, and WWII.
This is: "Hinkhouse, a service story".
