- Introduction:
"What I went through you don't forget. It had to have been the grace of God the way everything turned out. He was looking after me."
– Roy Cheek
No one could possibly fault WWII veteran Roy Cheek for not forgetting what he went through in the war: shot down on his 14th mission, bailing out at 900ft above the ground, surviving the jump, being rescued and hidden by the brave Dutch underground in Holland, repeatedly brushing up against German soldiers and not being captured, being shot at by both Germans and the British, and finally making it home. It's enough for 2 lifetimes. Heard as a common refrain from the Greatest Generation, God was everywhere in that war, evidenced by anyone surviving the hellish and harrowing combat of the European and Pacific theaters. Toward the end of his Feature, Roy comments that no one really knew the bravery of the WWII soldier. We believe him.
This is: "Cheek, a service story".
